Sidekick 1400u introduces Ultrasonic Multifeed Detection to company's award-winning desktop scanner family
AIIM CONFERENCE & EXPO, BOSTON, April 17, 2007 — Small offices and departments of larger organizations now can convert documents into digital images faster and more efficiently with a new color duplex scanner from BÖWE BELL + HOWELL. Part of the Sidekick scanner family, the Sidekick 1400u offers professional-grade scanning features in a compact departmental scanner.
The Sidekick 1400u was designed to deliver high-performance document imaging to medical, legal, insurance and financial offices, as well as departments of hospitals, government agencies, law firms, educational institutions and other midsize-to-large businesses. Ideal also for distributed scanning, the new scanner builds on the strengths of Sidekick, winner of the AIIM Best of Show Award in 2004.
The Sidekick 1400u scans up to 43 pages per minute and has a daily duty cycle of 4,000 pages. It has color and bitonal scanning options and can handle documents ranging from 2 inches x 2.8 inches to 8.5 inches x 14 inches (legal size). In addition to the scanner hardware, the bundle includes everything an end user needs to operate a desktop scanning solution:
- USB 2.0 cable for easy connectivity.
- Kofax’s VirtualReScan™ (VRS) 4.1 image enhancement technology for auto-cropping, deskew, and brightness and contrast control.
- Kofax’s Capio™ 1.5 capture software (in the United States only), to easily scan to PDF, file, retrieve and email high-quality document images.
- Power cord, roller cleaning paper and startup CD (with a direct ISIS driver, and for the first time, a direct TWAIN driver for Sidekick).

‘Ultrasonic Multifeed Detection’ Increases Productivity
With the Sidekick 1400u, BÖWE BELL + HOWELL has added to Sidekick’s capabilities Ultrasonic Multifeed Detection — a timesaving technology once available only in high-volume scanners.
First introduced by BÖWE BELL + HOWELL, Ultrasonic Multifeed Detection senses tiny gaps between documents unintentionally fed at the same time. When a double-feed occurs, the scanner automatically stops and alerts the scanner operator. This feature helps maximize efficiency by preventing time-consuming multifeeds and assuring that every document fed gets scanned.
When the Sidekick 1400u detects a multifeed, its Auto-Resolve feature prevents the scanned image from being sent to the scanning application. Instead, the scanner operator can return the multifed document to the top of the batch where it will be rescanned immediately without losing its position in the document sequence.
The Sidekick 1400u also features Multifeed Ignore, an advanced setting exclusive to BÖWE BELL + HOWELL. Multifeed Ignore prevents the scanner from incorrectly identifying “irregular” documents — such as sticky notes, labels, photographs and envelopes — as multifeeds. This reduces the labor-intensive task of sorting such documents from regular documents.
“As desktop scanners become common in traditional offices, users are demanding more advanced features in easy-to-use, entry-level scanners,” said Mandy Lewis, Sidekick senior product manager at BÖWE BELL + HOWELL. “It’s with that in mind that we selected the features for the Sidekick 1400u.”
Kofax, the world’s largest information capture vendor, will certify the Sidekick 1400u for use with its Document Scan Server in the second quarter. Document Scan Server is an integrated hardware/software solution that scan-enables almost any application, while providing secure scanner connectivity options and centralized management capabilities to reduce the cost and complexity of capture deployments.
The Sidekick 1400u was manufactured to meet Energy Star® requirements for energy efficiency that took effect April 1. Available in early spring 2007, the scanner has a list price of $4,095 and comes with a one-year warranty. An optional front-page pre-scan imprinter is available.
