How do I upgrade my Spectrum 2 PC Scan Station to a Spectrum XF?

  1. The Kofax VRS 4.0 package that is included in every new Spectrum XF shipping container, comes with a “Production Class” license number.
  2. For the Spectrum XF, you must install the 650i SCSI interface PC/PCI card that comes with the package/scanner. The Kofax 650i part number 16700020-000 is on a white label on the PCB, BBH part number S006542. The Spectrum XF will not work with any previous versions of the 650i..
  3. For the XF there are no “MV” or “HV” 650i PCBs. The scanner speed is resolved through the scanner hardware ID during the install process.
  4. For best results uninstall the previous VRS from the scan station PC, using the Windows Add or Remove Programs. Remove ALL instances of “VRS” or “Kofax”. You may also install VRS 4.00.119 over VRS 3.50.169.
  5. To begin the upgrade, start or restart the PC, and log in with a user name and password that has Windows Admin rights. VRS 4.0 does not require that the USER have Admin rights, but for install it is necessary.
  6. Insert the VRS 4.0 CD-ROM and follow the install process. Notes on the VRS install process can be found in PDF format on the CD-ROM.
  7. When the install process asks for a scanner to be selected, choose the Bowe Bell + Howell 8000 B/C. Not selecting the scanner and choosing “I will select my scanner later” will cause critical files not to be installed.
  8. After the install process has completed you will be prompted to restart the PC. Select “No” and manually select from the Windows Start>Shut Down.
  9. Once the PC has powered down, disconnect the AC line cord from the PC and install the NEW 650i into one of the PC scan station’s PCI slots.
  10. Close the PC and reconnect the AC line cord.
  11. Connect the Spectrum XF via the provided SCSI-3 interface cable to the PC’s 650i. NOTE. Always install any SCSI cable to the matching connector with full view of the connection. Do not force the connection or the male pins could bend and upon power up of the 650i and the XF EGSA interface, damage will occur to both boards.
  12. Power on the XF scanner and view the scanner’s OI until it reads “Load Paper”.
  13. Power up the PC scan station and log in.
  14. Next, Windows Hardware Manager will install the new 650i card drivers and the Spectrum XF. If Windows does not install the Spectrum model XF, no need to worry. The Windows Device Manager does not handle the Spectrum XF.
  15. After the process is complete, VRS 4.0 will be ready to use.
