The information in this Technical Bulletin, advises on the method used to correct several
Windows XP based conditions, that may exist with Bell+Howell Scanners.

Problem:
§ Your SCSI scanner may be enumerated several times and multiple instances of your scanner may appear in the Windows XP Device Manager.Windows XP Hardware Wizard continues to loop “New Hardware Found”.
§ This issue can occur if your scanner reports multiple Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) or Target IDs.
§ When it is enumerated by your SCSI adapter.

The following procedure should be completed in its entirety.
Action:
The following Procedure should only be attempted by a qualified IT professional or person(s) extremely familiar in editing the system registry. Bell+Howell Scanners cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue:
1. From the WinXP desktop select Start>Search >. Enter in the following file name to search for; Setupapi.log This file is located in the Windows folder off the c:\ root directory. When the file is found, double click on the file with your mouse or select OPEN. A dialog box will open and ask you what application or program to run with. Select Notepad.
2. Go to the end of the file and note the last entries. Such as:

*Note. Some or all, of the scanner ID’s may appear in your search and may vary from PC to PC (WinXP new or upgrade). More specifically the number “120” or “0” may be of a different value. These hardware ID values will be used for the new registry key later in this procedure. Not shown is the data that immediately precedes the scanner descriptions, such as,"SCSI\scannerb&hscsicopiscan_8125d_", up to the first comma (,), and not including these items. When creating the registry key, for best results, copy or cut and paste, with care, this data. For example, you would copy the following data:

3. Next, start Registry Editor. Start>Run>regedit
4. Locate, and then click the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ScsiPort\SpecialTargetList
5. On the Edit menu, point to New and then click Key. Type or PASTE the hardware ID of your scanner that you copied in step 2, for the name of the new key. Then press ENTER. scannerb&h_scsicopiscan_8125d__0120

6. Next, on the Edit menu, point to New and then click DWORD Value.
7. Type SetLunInCdb, and then press ENTER.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. Type 1, and then click OK.
10. Close Registry Editor or repeat steps 5-9 until all the scanner ID’s are entered.

Some scanners that exhibit this behavior were identified during Windows XP Beta testing, and these are already listed in the SpecialTargetList key in the registry.
Hardware Device Manager
1. Go to “Add Remove New Software”. Delete “BH8000. Leave the file *.pxn files.
2. Disable (not delete) all B+H profiles in the Device Manager.
3. In the WinXP Device Hardware Manager, disable all the entries under Other Devices that are listed as Bell+Howell scanners.
4. SCSI device drivers should be updated via the Manufacture of the SCSI card.

6. SCSI connections work with Kofax Adrenalinehttp://www.kofax.com or Adaptec http://www.adaptec.com/ SCSI interface cards. Your choice should depend on the transmission speed you need Kofax.
