Spectrum XF DEMO VRS 4.x Install

Installing VRS 4.0 onto a test or Demo PC.

The Kofax VRS 4.0 CD-ROM included with the Spectrum XF DEMO does not come with a required license number. In its place is a production class test Dongle, which has been secured to the SCSI-3 interconnect cable. The rope cable allows the qualified installer to slide the Dongle towards the active USB port on the PC.

Install Procedure.

Please read through this entire procedure before starting you install.

Unpack the scanner from the shipping container. DO NOT lift the scanner by the document feeder. This can cause damage to the feeder and its document feed angle, resulting in possible document or paper jam. Two people, who are able to lift over 40 US pounds, are required to lift the Spectrum scanner out of the shipping container. The supplied Spectrum Owners Manual has further detailed instructions.

For best results uninstall the previous VRS from the scan station PC, using the Windows Add or Remove Programs. Remove ALL instances of “VRS” or “Kofax”. You may also install VRS 4.00.119 over VRS 3.50.169.

To begin the upgrade or install, start or restart the PC, and log in with a user name and password that has Windows Admin rights. VRS 4.0 does not require that the USER have Admin rights, but for install it is necessary.

Insert the VRS 4.0 CD-ROM and follow the install process. Notes on the VRS install process can be found in PDF format on the Kofax Install CD-ROM.

During the install process, a dialog screen will ask you for a license number.

Do not enter in any information on this screen and click on NEXT. You will receive a message that the install will install a DEMO version of VRS 4. Continue with this DEMO install. When the PC is restarted and the 650i and Dongle are connected, the DEMO will be switched off.

When the install process asks for a scanner to be selected, choose the Bowe Bell + Howell 8000 B/C. Not selecting the scanner and choosing “I will select my scanner later” will cause critical files not to be installed.

When the install process asks to “Check for Updates” select NO or Cancel. Later, you may choose to check for updates after you have rebooted the PC under the Windows START>All Programs>Kofax VRS>Check for Updates.

After the install process has completed you will be prompted to restart the PC. Select “No” and manually select from the Windows Start>Shut Down.

Once the PC has powered down, disconnect the AC line cord from the PC.

For the Spectrum XF, you must install the 650i SCSI interface PC/PCI card that comes with the VRS package/scanner. The Kofax 650i part number 16700020-000 is on a white label on the 650i PCB, BBH part number S006542. The Spectrum XF will not work with any previous versions of the 650i.

With the PC power off and the AC line cord disconnected, install the 650i SCSI interface card into one of the PCs PCI slots and close the cover on the PC. Next connect the SCSI-3 D68M cable into the PC’s 650i. NOTE. Always install any SCSI cable to the matching connector with full view of the connection. Do not force the connection or the male pins could bend and upon power up of the 650i and the XF EGSA interface, damage will occur to both boards.

Note. For the XF there is no “MV” or “HV” 650i PCBs. The scanner speed is resolved through the scanner hardware ID during the install process.

Locate the USB Dongle and install into one of the PCs active USB ports. Active meaning- not disabled by any previous setup.

Connect the Spectrum XF via the provided SCSI-3 interface cable from the PC’s 650i. NOTE. Always install any SCSI cable to the matching connector with full view of the connection. Do not force the connection or the male pins could bend and upon power up of the 650i and the XF EGSA interface, damage will occur to both boards.

Plug in the AC line cord to the Spectrum XF and turn ON the power switch. View the scanner’s OI (operator interface) or display and note when it reads “Load Paper”.

Reconnect the AC line cord to the PC

Then power up the PC scan station and log in.

Next, Windows Hardware Manager will install the new 650i card drivers and the Spectrum XF. If Windows does not install the Spectrum model XF, no need to worry. The Windows Device Manager does not handle the Spectrum XF. In addition, you will notice the install of the USB Dongle. Also know as a “Rainbow Device”. If the Dongle looks for a driver, point the Windows dialog box the VRS CD-ROM folder, D:\Dongle Drivers\WIN_NT

After the process is complete, VRS 4.0 will be ready to use.
